Under the Southern Cross: Flying Colors Vol. IV
Napoleon's invasions of Portugal and Spain resulted in the fragmentation of Royalist sovereignty over their respective empires in the New World. This presented an opportunity for patriots throughout the continent, and in the early 19th century, independence movements sprouted all over the Americas. While names like Bolivar, San Martin, and Belgrano may be familiar, the crucial role of naval and riverine forces in the Wars of Independence and subsequent conflicts between the newly formed American republics has often been overlooked. Until now.

Under the Southern Cross: The South American Republics in the Age of Fighting Sail is the fourth installment in the esteemed Flying Colors series of naval combat games. This edition focuses on the southern region of the South American continent, encompassing Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador. It covers the Wars of Independence starting in 1810 and extends to the final fully sail-powered naval war between Argentina and Uruguay in 1841. These conflicts attracted naval officers recently unemployed due to the conclusion of the Napoleonic Wars and served as a testing ground for the first generation of native Latin American naval heroes. The updated rules introduce elements such as river and tidal currents, modified grounding rules for operations in the Rio de la Plata and Uruguay rivers, and the use of ship's boats to tow stranded or becalmed ships. The game includes over two dozen battle scenarios of varying scales, ranging from small engagements to full-fledged fleet actions. Additionally, it reintroduces the popular ship duel map and activation cards originally featured in Serpents of the Seas (Flying Colors volume II), along with 18 ship duel scenarios.
Like its predecessors, Under the Southern Cross is a standalone game that can also be fully compatible with other volumes in the series. Everything needed to play is included in the box!
Will you, as the Spanish, attempt to suppress the rebel American governments and preserve the centuries-old Spanish Empire? Or will you support the Patriot forces in their quest to cast off the imperialist yoke of European monarchies? With Under the Southern Cross, you can now explore these pivotal moments in history.
